Data Visualisation and Coding. Visualising Sound.

How can I make my visualisation with sound? As known sound has lots of raw data. such as…

And add amplitude for visualisation a sound

There are two main properties of a regular vibration – the amplitude and the frequency – which affect the way it sounds.

Amplitude is the size of the vibration, and this determines how loud the sound is.  We have already seen that larger vibrations make a louder sound. Frequency is the speed of the vibration, and this determines the pitch of the sound.  It is only useful or meaningful for musical sounds, where there is a strongly regular waveform. Frequency is measured as the number of wave cycles that occur in one second.

Amplitude and Frequency

Frequency data from the song “Tained Love”- Frequency spectrum. And here is raw data coming from mp3 file:

and more experiments with style of visualisation

Playing with sound visualisation and frequency, we can create a sound, by setting parameters such as amplitude and frequency. So if amplitude and frequency come from some data set, we can create unique sound of data. This thoughts remind me a project by Leanne Wijnsma and Froukje Tan “Smell of Data” created to instinctively alert internet users of data leaks on personal devices

During my research I found an interesting project of Simon Roger call “TwoTone” a tool to represent a data as sound.

If to talk about frequency not from a music view, but talk about Frequency analysis . Frequency analysis is based on the fact that, in any given stretch of written language, certain letters and combinations of letters occur with varying frequencies. Moreover, there is a characteristic distribution of letters that is roughly the same for almost all samples of that language. For instance, given a section of English languageETA and O are the most common, while ZQX and J are rare. Likewise, THERON, and AN are the most common pairs of letters (termed bigrams or digraphs), and SSEETT, and FF are the most common repeats.[1] The nonsense phrase “ETAOIN SHRDLU” represents the 12 most frequent letters in typical English language text. Agent based models and complex systems

The agent model represents the real world in the form of specified active subsystems, called agents, and consists of individual agents and their environment. Each of the agents interacts with other agents and the external environment and in the process of functioning. Agents function independently, according to their own laws, asynchronously, usually in such systems there is no centralized control.

Cognitive infinite

My last project Fast forward I called “Cognitive Infinite” as it more personal. I was always thinking about life like a patterns. Why we are making the same mistakes years by years, chasing the same ways. Of course patterns in our life is not about moving forward, but… the order creating chaos, and from chaos we can create new better order. So I do feel my message quite strong, hope another people gonna understand it. As nowadays we are suffering from ourselves and more and more people calling to psychologist.

For me as a person who chose for next year Post Graduate Diploma for visual communication this project looks like a step forward, just honestly, I would make an editorial design for this as well, to improve my self, and maybe some typographic works. Typography animation with patterns can say a lot as well.

Im pretty sure (haha) I did achieve my aims in my project proposal.

I tried different texture:

Actually for future I have some plans how to improve this message. It is more about astrology, as all we know that natal card can tell a lot of about you. It shows stage of moon, you patterns from the past and how they can change your future. So I m thinking to visualise this card and make some kind of application.

Reflecting on the development of my Fast Forward project Outcome

So as I decided for my outcome to make an animation with patterns, all about dissipative systems and fractals, which a re telling you it is cognitive infinite, I used Adobe After Effects for this.

First problem was – what to do, what kind of video.

I took the translation of Morse language as a basis. using a hole punch, I made holes and with a marker I applied a tone to get a texture. I scanned the finished pattern.

Morse code
Morse code

So first I tried to make a fractal video. The interesting moment is – fractal is a mathematical model, and you can find at Internet lot of web side which gonna help you to make a fractal using the equation. But I wanted to make a fractal from my pattern, and I wanted to save texture. as a result I got kind of fractal which looks like a start. Anyway I didn’t like that animation. first, because it looks simple, second – you cam see a texture there, which I really wanted to save. And there was no clear message, should be some explanation about that animation. So I just gave up with that idea. In ideal, would be nice to create amazing animation with fractal by writing java code. Just I didn’t want to spend a lot for time creating mathematical model.

So to save a texture and create patterns I just make a video by relating the same phrase 5 times. Of course it should be infinite, but my file was to heavy for that. somehow (from keyframes where I deceasing my patterns) after encoding I lost quality of my vide, that is what I would like to improve more. And for developed my idea I would like to move camera more, floating between layers.

Reflecting on my ideas for Fast Forward project

Reflecting on my ideas for Fast Forward project

For me Fast Forward project my first idea was: break down and create new.  Get rid of everything superfluous, everything that pulls you back and prevents you from moving forward. Return to zero to go far on the lung. Sometimes in order to move forwarder past, fears, people are prevent us. Leave it right in the past. Trow off unnecessary, break into small pieces and save only necessary pieces.  Lose part of yourself and create new one. For this idea would be nice to chose Data Visualisation and inspiration from Chuck Close art and techniques (fragmented image) to create step by step through timeline a face, from some time point (far example, middle age crisis) blur it, glitch, break down.

And I was thinking more and more, I got idea from dissipative systems : from order to chaos. From chaos to order. All difficult open-strutters (systems) creating order from chaos. And part of chaos – fractals, infinitive patterns. Human is self-organised system. Fractals – patterns. I chose cognitive patterns and decided to create an animation to visualise my idea.

As I didn’t want to send clear message, I used morse code and pricker to create message “Cognitive infinite”.

Morse code

As it should be pattern, I decided to repeat it in my animation. As I was thinking about dissipative systems, I created chaos from patterns, and make them organise at the end to create an order.  As the final improvement I’ve added the sound of morse code.

By the way I would develop this idea, as changing speed and add more patterns, and as morse also use light, maybe would be nice to make it blinking.

Primary and secondary research reflecting

Our last project called Fast Forward. It is kind of personal project, it is more about what Fast Forward means for us.

Fast forward
Fast forward

My primary research I start from thinking what is fast forward, which kind of association do I have with this words. I started to draw, mostly it was motion images. Unfortunately this method didn’t help me to create my idea. Second, as a task, I started to write 100 words, associated with Fast Forward. I divided to “Fast” and “Forward”, what these words mean to me separately. Further from separate words I began to connect with connections. I helps me more to get my first idea for project. And in the process of working on a project, the idea has changed a little and deepened in the sense.

Play words
Play words

My secondary research I start at Library, just randomly chosen books and magazines. Unfortunately, even I found something interesting, it wasn’t connect to my idea, and I wasn’t sure what should I do: animation or editorial design. I visited exhibition of Bill Viola, as I was thinking changing personality through time, rewind. But this idea looked so complicated for me. I decided to visit Maritime Museum. So at Musem I found device for Morse code which became as inspiration for my cognitive patterns.

In the future, I would probably watch more movies and visit more modern exhibitions, or use Chuck Close technics to create Data visualisation for Fast Forward.

Reflect on experiences of cross cultural communication in a learning context

Over 9 month past since I start my Foundation course at London College of Communication. Studying abroad was a big experience for me, as it was first time, when I spend more than 6 month in another country and have been studying at University. But at the end of my course I can steadily say, It was such a nice experience, which help me to improve my communication skills and the way of my thinking in a good direction.

I can describe myself as introvert person, so I was worrying a lot about my study in London. Most of my worries was about: language barrier, difference in mentality, age difference.

Before I give some examples about my experiences of cross cultural communication, I would say, that all my worries were greatly overstated.

As a student of foundation course, we have lot of workshops during our Level 3. I would like to speak about one of them, when we were working in group of 4 people (all of student in my group were from different countries). In the class we got some amount of chewy candies and supposed to organise them to present  Data Visualisation. First 3 minutes we were confusing, how we should start, how to organise our team. But maybe as we are art students and we are involved and interesting in process our communication was good, even language barrier wasn’t a problem. I just understand one thing – if you don’t understand someone, you should ask as much question as will help you to understand person. It is great opportunity to study with International team, because we are from different countries and have different mentality and point of view, it helps you to learn more and quicker, it is helps me to see the world around with wild open eyes, it allowed me to see things differently, beyond the boundaries of my mentality and education.

As a conclusion I want to say, that studying abroad for art and design student gives you lots of opportunities to improve yourself.

Personal Project Proposal: Fast Forward

Project Proposal

Life in 21st century is busy and fast. Our life starts from the born and ends in the death (Bill Viola and his exhibition “Life Death Rebirth” ). When we come to this world, we are like a white sheet of paper, we just start to explore this world. Year by year we get new knowledge, connections, friends.

Get rid of all the excess that pulls you back. Reset, to go further on easy. Sometimes to move ahead. Interferes with rhinestones. people, the past that inhibit you. Leave the past in the past. Get rid of unnecessary. throw off the ballast. Transform, lose part of yourself, to create a new one. You have to lose yourself to find yourself.

Humans and society are dissipative systems, in which order is horn from chaos. Fractals, which is infinite patterns are part of chaos. What is the patterns and where we can meet them. Was Om talking about personality, I would like to show cognitive patterns.

So my intended audience is mature people with midlife crisis.

For my influence I am planning to visit exhibitions: Bill Viola/Michelangelo ” Life Death Rebirth” and Diane Arbus “In the Beginning”. The subject areas which I will research about deconstruction and construction . Works of artist Robert Rauschemberg and Chuck Close (fragmented image).

My process areas can be: digital space (using photoshop, Indesign, Adobe After Effects), Photo studio, Screen Printing to create serious of collage.

For my critical review it is necessary to understand whether I managed to get the message to the target audience that I had intended to convey initially. How easy my work is to understand, how well it is done, and the technician in the process of creation was tried.

Collection project. Reflection.

I feel this is my worth project of this course. Here is some positive and negatives sides.

Positive: I learned Illustrator and Adobe After Effects, used 3D workshop for Laser Cut and spent lots of color spray.

Negative: Didn’t have enough time and skills at After Effects to make my work quality enough.

So first my mistake is I left just 4 days for Adobe After Effects, even I never opened it before and as a result I didn’t have enough time to learn it enough. I used pictures from Illustarotor, so when camera zoomed or I changed Z-axis value, you can see pixels. Also I don’t like how to camera moving between layers, I think problem is Anchor points. I don’t like my color pallet and background as well. I tried to use scans from my air spray drawing, but it wasn’t enough. So I’m really not happy with my outcome.

But anyway I want to develop my skills in adobe After Effects and develop this video after.

If to speak about my idea and project at all, what I want to develop. So, about food collections, I would like to think more deep, like Food and society, coz thats true, we are what we eat. Different culture, different food (somebody eat more meat – red color, some nationality eat more fish or vegetables). For this maybe I can create color pallet for all countries. Or I which to use 3D objects for my outcome. Some real installations or program which can imitate something.

Another my idea is some kind of magazine – about cubism and abstract art.
