Personal Project Proposal: Fast Forward

Life in 21st century is busy and fast. Or life starts from born and ends in death. When we come to this world, we are like a white sheet of paper, we just start to explore this world. year by year we get new knowledge, connections, friends.  Get rid of all the excess that pulls you back. Reset, to go further on easy. Sometimes to move ahead. interferes with rhinestones. people, the past that inhibit you. Leave the past in the past. Get rid of unnecessary. throw off the ballast. Transform, lose part of yourself, to create a new one. You have to lose yourself to find yourself.  So my intended audience is mature people with midlife crisis.

For my influence I am planning to visit exhibitions: Bill Viola/Michelangelo ” Life Death Rebirth” and Diane Arbus “In the Beginning”. The subject areas which I will research about deconstruction and construction (?). Works of artist Robert Rauschemberg.

My process areas can be: digital space (using photoshop, Indesign, Adobe After Effects), Photo studio (?), Screen Printing to create serious of collage.

For my critical review it is necessary to understand whether I managed to get the message to the target audience that I had intended to convey initially. How easy my work is to understand, how well it is done, and the technician in the process of creation was tried.

Collection project. Reflection.

I feel this is my worth project of this course. Here is some positive and negatives sides.

Positive: I learned Illustrator and Adobe After Effects, used 3D workshop for Laser Cut and spent lots of color spray.

Negative: Didn’t have enough time and skills at After Effects to make my work quality enough.

So first my mistake is I left just 4 days for Adobe After Effects, even I never opened it before and as a result I didn’t have enough time to learn it enough. I used pictures from Illustarotor, so when camera zoomed or I changed Z-axis value, you can see pixels. Also I don’t like how to camera moving between layers, I think problem is Anchor points. I don’t like my color pallet and background as well. I tried to use scans from my air spray drawing, but it wasn’t enough. So I’m really not happy with my outcome.

But anyway I want to develop my skills in adobe After Effects and develop this video after.

If to speak about my idea and project at all, what I want to develop. So, about food collections, I would like to think more deep, like Food and society, coz thats true, we are what we eat. Different culture, different food (somebody eat more meat – red color, some nationality eat more fish or vegetables). For this maybe I can create color pallet for all countries. Or I which to use 3D objects for my outcome. Some real installations or program which can imitate something.

Another my idea is some kind of magazine – about cubism and abstract art.

Collection Project. Ideas.

It was quite difficult to find an idea for my Collection project. I start from my first collection of constructivism patterns, and decided to make a shape of food what I have been eaten. Color, shapes, proportions. And wanted to create at the end some kind of collage (Kandinsky style). You are What you eat. Everybody have different taste of food, so if to collect it from different persons, you can create different patterns for each one.

But actually at the end decided to create a short (1,5 minute) animation. Different layers, and camera moving between them, movements…

Collections project

One more project. And it is about Collections. Have I been collected something in my life? I do remember when I was child, I had stamp collections. There was around 3-4 albums with 40 stamps each other. I don’t remember I’ve been collecting something else, just maybe photos in my phone of some artists works, which I am taking from exhibitions and Instagram. And.. from last year, being so interested about editorial design I am collecting magazines from jungle shop, Notting hill market, doesn’t matter, from every second shop where I can find them. I wish I have more VOGUE magazines in my collection. Oldest one from 70’s. It is really interesting for me to see how their editorial style was changing within years and years.

It is interesting that it is a fact, that many creative people are collectors. Artist Joan Miró collected siurells, clay whistles from Mallorca, Spain. Scientist Charles Darwin became interested in studying nature when he became a collector of bugs.

Collections can also be sources of creative inspiration. Miró amassed a huge collection of siurells during his lifetime, filling his studio and house with them. For Miró, siurells were more than just clay whistles; they were also memories of some of his happiest moments as a child.  They are brightly painted and almost always playfully shaped to represent people or animals. So when he wanted to imbue his paintings with playful happiness, Miró often borrowed both the colors and the shapes of siurells (Watkins, 1990) (www.psychologytoday.com).

As I chose pathway Data Visualisation I decided to make new collection which I can represent as a data. And I start collecting food what I am eating every day from morning till evening during a month.

My 3 collections

For my collections I chose constructivism patterns, my own collection of old magazines (so interesting about editorial design), and food collections (what I was eating during 1 month from morning till evening).

First collection – patterns. Should be from Constructivizm artists (most of them of Popova, Tatlin, Kandinsky) and should contain 3 and more colors. So connections between items of my patterns collection are they all contain simple shapes like a line, square, circle and dots.

My second collections – magazines. Different year of publishing, and all of them more fashion and about social life. So connections between them – is editorial design. How design was changing during the years. I think the oldest one from 60’s.

My second collection – food collection. I was taken photo what I was eating during a month. Connections between items – all of them food, repeating.

Unfortunatelly I can not find connections between my three different collections.

Reflecting one interests

I chosen pathway Graphic Design and Data Visualization.

During my Level 3 course I can say I have developed so far some of my skills, changed my point of view and not afraid anymore to try something new. I learned InDesign, Illustrator and Adobe After Effects, developed my skills in Adobe Photoshop. I found for myself some amazing designers, which works became an inspirations for my outcomes. They are: Karel Martens, Paul Elliman, Alexey Brodovitch.I’ve been research many resources at LCC library, most interesting I find books about Data visualization.

The main points of any projects for brief are primary and secondary research. It is really important to understand what is your brief about. As secondary research, as I understood it is really important to look at another artists works to find some inspiration. Or as a Design Thinking book telling you, there are 7 steps for any designers in there works: define, research, diet, prototype, select, implement and learn.

1968:Protest and The Photobook

Speaking about the era of the 1960s and early 1970s, documentary film director Chris Marker used the expression “air color red”, meaning primarily the rise of social rights movements. Events have captured the whole world – for the first time in the history of modern times, the student has realized that she is an independent force, and youth movements have created new forms of life, culture and art. The peak of the strikes of students and workers in Italy fell on the years 1968-1969. Student discontent was due to education reform. Student studies have touched other continents: South and North America, Asia, and Africa. And in Mexico in 1968 Olympics held games. Huge money was allocated from the state budget for this mass event, which led to an increase in taxes. In the US, the fight against racial segregation and education policy has become a feature of student speeches.

But how young generation know about 1968? What historical confirmation of that year was preserved in the archives? Is there was some media, which people use to tell the truth about , media fro public perception and understanding of political movements, such as mainstream press, newspapers, zine?

If you are interesting in mainstream press and mass media about 1968 year events, that you would be interested to visit exhibition at Tate Modern call “1968: Protests and The Photobook”.

As we know, worldwide protests of 1968 for the civil rights, feminism, against military and bureaucratic elites… massive protests all over the World, one of the most dramatic years in modern history. And such  a small room (as I can call it a room) at Tate Modern with artists work about protests. So the question is why then I spend in this room more time than in others? The answer is posters.  They will tell you  how the 1968 year protests impacted on artists, inspiring agitation propogandation posters, such a new form of art. Posters are simple, not goo drawing, but “screaming”. “RETOUR A LA NORMALE” – return to normal, with sheeps on it, French poster. Even if you don’t know the French, you can easily understand what is this poster telling you. Clone of sheep Dolly, making everyone the same. The most posters from France, as we know the best known events took place in France.

The photobooks were published around all this year, and showing political activism in France, Japan, Italy, Czechoslovakia. Some photos document activism actions.

Should be there some documentary film about these protest? Unfortunately I didn’t find it, or pass away, without any attention.Even I spent long time in this room, I would expected from this exhibition  to see more about this historical year.

At my Christmas holidays I had chance to visit exhibition about the same topic in Moscow. The exhibition was at Moscow Museum of modern art and  called “Forbidden to Forbid”. This exhibition is different from Tate Modern’s exhibition, it is not focused on the events of 1968, she talks about the student and strike movements in the world in the 1960s.

For my outcome I choose editorial design. I can’t say it was easy to choose 1 idea for my magazine.

I can say for my primary research I spent lots of time outside, and also spent lots of time in the library doing my secondary research.

I feel that my main problem is as I am thinking too much about idea of my project, trying to make it more interesting and meaningful. But as much it was meaningful as much I did not know who to visualise my idea. After 2 weeks of suffering and breaking my mind I just fed up and I think tried to make something more simple but not less meaningful. I hope I was successful.

So as I was curious about symmetry of Greenwich architecture and contrast of Greenwich town centre and Peninsula I decided to show it at my editorial.

Another problem which I faced to – how to put photos and text to my pages and with colour palette should I choose. I was looking for books and magazines at the library. I found inspiration from Alexey Brodowich, that’s why I decided to make this page:

Next step was to choose colour palette:

For me Greenwich always  has a contrast. I live in Azof street, which is always my Greenwich Meridian. If I am going to university by subway, im turning right side from my street and found myself in new modern Greenwich, millennium Greenwich. If Im going to university by bus, I am turning right and see old, historical, calm with lots of old streets and houses Greenwich. It is like to travel through the time for me. Left – past, right – future.

But it was enough for me and I was looking for more information and more contrast. I was always amazed by Old Royal Naval College architecture, most of how symmetry is it. Look for Greenwich from Google maps I realised that not just Royal college has a symmetry line, I found where this line start and where it ends. One day I came to Greenwich Observatory to prove my theory, find there statue of James Wolf, and understand that I was right. But new view, which opened to me from Greenwich park. There was one more contrast, it was business buildings of Canary Work.  This how this idea came to my mind.

So, my new project about postcode. I choose Greenwich (SE 10), as I live here and this place make me feel good and safety.

For my primary research I developed a rout to know Greenwich better. I have been in the same place in different part of day ( morning, afternoon, evening. Workdays or weekends). Makes some sketches in my sketchbook and took some photos as well.

And for my secondary research I visited Greenwich museums and spend time at the Library reading some facts about Greenwich history. Also reading locals newspapers and news from Internet.

I had some questions for which I couldn’t find an answers from Internet, so one day, I found a shop with antique maps (as the same time I was curious about how Greenwich changed over the years). And I found the answer at that shop, just ask man, who was selling maps. To be honest, asking someone, who knows history more helpful.
